Clutch & Flywheelin Philadelphia

A slipping or grabbing clutch means the gearbox has to come out.

About this repair

A clutch is a wear part: it is the link between the engine and the gearbox, and it gives up gradually. Replacing it means removing the transmission, so we also inspect the flywheel, the release bearing and the rear main seal while it is out.

Signs you need it

  • The engine revs rise but the car does not accelerate in higher gears
  • A pedal that feels spongy, sticks to the floor or engages very high or low
  • Shuddering when pulling away
  • Difficulty getting into gear

Don't replace it. Repair it.

Before you replace the transmission

A slipping or noisy gearbox is not always a dead one. A solenoid, a seal, a clutch pack, a worn clutch or a bad mount can feel the same. We find which one it is before anyone talks about a new unit.

Common questions

Why replace the flywheel with the clutch?

A worn or heat-damaged flywheel makes a new clutch grab or shudder. It is inspected while the transmission is out, and resurfaced or replaced when it needs it.

How long does a clutch last?

It varies with the car and with how it is driven. City traffic, towing and riding the pedal shorten it a great deal.
