About this repair
Sometimes an engine has lost too much compression, thrown a rod or been run without oil, and fixing it costs more than replacing it. We confirm that the engine is really the problem, go over the options with you, and carry out the swap with the supporting parts that need to change with it.
Signs you need it
- A deep knock from inside the engine that gets louder with revs
- Metal flakes or glitter in the oil, or in the oil filter
- Heavy smoke from the exhaust and very high oil use
- Low compression on one or more cylinders, or an engine that will not turn over
Don't replace it. Repair it.
Before you replace the engine
A replacement is the most expensive answer, and not always the only one. A leaking gasket, a failed sensor, a worn timing part or a single damaged cylinder can look like a dead engine. We find the real cause first.

Common questions
How do I know if I need a new engine or just a repair?
A diagnosis answers that. If the damage is limited to the head, a gasket or a few parts, a repair may be enough. If the bottom end has failed, with a spun bearing, a broken rod or a scored block, replacing or rebuilding the engine is usually the sensible path.
Replace, rebuild or buy used?
Each has its place. A rebuild reuses your block with new internals; a replacement swaps in a different engine; a used engine costs less up front but has an unknown history. We explain the trade-offs for your car before you decide.
